Grip that lasts a semester
Dead Hang
Grab a bar. Hang. Arms long. Shoulders packed, not shrugged into your ears. Breathe. That is the set.
Hunter: I use hangs on baseball weeks when I cannot bury my arms. Time is the load. If I start swinging like a piñata, I drop and reset.
Cues
- Hands about shoulder width. Thumbs around the bar.
- Scapulas down. You are hanging, not shrugging.
- Ribs quiet. Legs can hang or a slight hollow. No kicking.
- Breathe. Jaw unclenched.
- Drop with control when the grip or the shoulders quit. Do not peel off one finger at a time as a stunt.
Setup
A pull-up bar, a sturdy jungle gym, or the high rail at the gym. If you cannot reach, a box to step off. Start with 15-20 seconds. Three sets. Rest a full minute.
Where it sits
Dorm pull day after doorframe rows. Baseball in-season uses it on the upper keep day after face pulls. Same hang. Log the seconds so next week is not a guess.
Why it is not a pull-up
You are building the hang you will need later. If you can already pull up, still hang. Grip and packed shoulders are the point. Do not turn every hang into a sloppy pull-up you will not count.
Progress without heroics
Add 5 seconds when the last set still looks quiet. Or keep the time and shake less. If 40 seconds is easy, a backpack is a later option. Log the version.
Common misses
Shrugging so your neck disappears. Kipping for fun. Holding your breath until you go red. Also: jumping off a high bar with no plan for the landing.
FAQ
Active or passive hang?
Packed shoulders is the default here. A fully relaxed hang is a different drill. Pick one for a month.
No bar in the dorm?
A park bar, a gym, or skip hangs and row the door. Do not hang from a shower rod.
Log dead-hang time in the free Vitality Engine. Duration counts. Guessing does not.
