Horizontal pull, stack you can see

Seated Cable Row

Sit tall. Pull the handle to your ribs. Your torso is a post, not a rocking chair.

Hunter: If I see you leaning back like you are starting a boat, the stack won. Drop a plate. Row.

Cues

  • Feet on the platform. Soft knees.
  • Sit on your sit bones. Chest proud.
  • Pull to the lower ribs or upper abs, depending on the handle.
  • Squeeze. Pause. Do not bounce the stack off the pins.
  • Reach forward to stretch without rounding into a shrimp.

Setup

V-handle is a fine start. Sit far enough that the stack is floating at the stretch. If you cannot keep your torso quiet, you sat too far or grabbed too much.

Why it sits next to pulldowns

Pulldowns are vertical. This is horizontal. You want both in a week if you press a lot. First gym month, 3 sets here after a press is a complete pull.

Rest, log, next set

90 seconds. Write the pin. If the gym is loud and you will forget, Engine is the notebook. That is the whole reason the app is free to log.

Handle choices that stay honest

V-handle or close neutral is the cleanest start. A wide bar can become a rear-delt swing if you chase ego weight. Pick one handle for four weeks so the numbers in Engine compare.

Cable row vs dumbbell row

Cables keep tension at the stretch and show the stack. Dumbbells teach each side to stay quiet. Use both across a week. Do not rename a cable set as a dumbbell row in your history.

Common misses

The rock. The shrug. The half-rep. Using a wide bar and turning it into a rear-delt swing. Pick one handle for a month so the log is not chaos.

FAQ

Can I use straps?

If grip dies before your back does, straps are allowed. Log the same. Grip can get extra work on carries.

Should I lean back on the seated cable row?

A tiny brace is fine. A full rock to finish the rep is not. If you need the rock, drop a plate.

V-handle or wide bar?

Start with a V-handle or close grip. Wide bars are optional later when your elbows track clean and the torso stays quiet.
