Shoulders that last a semester

Band Pull-Apart

Hold a band at arm's length. Pull it apart until it taps your chest. Pause. This is the boring work that keeps pressing available.

Hunter: I keep a light band in my bag. 15 quiet reps after a press day. If I have to lean, the band is too fat.

Cues

  • Band at chest height, arms long, soft elbows.
  • Ribs down. Do not turn it into a backbend.
  • Pull until the band meets your chest. Shoulder blades slide, they do not shrug.
  • Pause a beat. The band should still have tension.
  • Return slow. Do not let it snap your hands together.

Setup

Light band. If you do not have one, a cable face pull is the gym cousin. Same idea: light, strict, logged.

Why it is a lift-cue page

Beginners copy bench and skip the small pulling. Pull-aparts are how you keep a press week from turning into cranky shoulders. Three sets of 12-15. Log them so they happen twice.

Dorm version

Doorframe plus a band. Same cues. Pair with face-height if you can loop it. Then log. That is enough accessory work for a school night.

Common misses

Bending the elbows into a row. Shrugging. Using a band so heavy you have to hop. Also: 50 sloppy reps as a warm-up you never log.

FAQ

Overhand or underhand?

Overhand is the default. Underhand is a fine swap if it feels better. Pick one for a month.
